Dr. Jose Miller (1925-2006): The Guardian of Jewish Life in Cuba

Dr. Jose Miller stands as one of the most influential figures in the history of Jewish life in Cuba. Leading the community for 25 years—from 1981, when it was small and struggling, to the 1990s, when it saw remarkable growth and reemergence on the global stage—his steadfast leadership left a lasting impact. As president of the Joint Coordinating Committee (J.C.C.), La Casa de la Comunidad Hebrea de Cuba, and the Beth Shalom synagogue, Dr. Miller guided the community through one of its most challenging periods, ensuring its survival and growth.

Dr. Miller’s role was pivotal during a time when the community faced significant challenges in maintaining its identity and traditions, particularly in the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution. Despite these difficulties, his unwavering dedication ensured the survival and eventual revival of Jewish life on the island.

Dr. Miller’s dedication to his community was unparalleled. Members of the Cuban Jewish community frequently praised his commitment:

    • “He cares for everyone,” said one member. “He will take the time to speak to anyone coming in; he meets all the groups that visit, and he spends his spare time at the Patronato making sure things are going well.”
    • Another shared, “His knowledge of Cuba’s Jewish community is immense. Just ask him anything you want, and he will know something about it.”

Dr. Miller’s deep passion for Judaism was evident in his leadership. As one member said, “He had a very strong Jewish heart, a Jewish spirit.” Though known for his cantankerous and stubborn nature, those close to him knew his toughness came from a place of love—love for his synagogue, his community, and his mission to renew Jewish life in Cuba. He played a pivotal role in connecting the Cuban government with the Jewish community, advocating for their needs and preserving traditions. Through his efforts, including overseeing the reconstruction of the Patronato, he revitalized Jewish life and ensured the enduring legacy of Judaism in Cuba.

    A Lasting Influence

Dr. Miller’s legacy extends far beyond his years of leadership. As one community member said, “Dr. Miller revitalized Judaism in Cuba and became a pillar of our community.” His dedication to Jewish education, cultural preservation, and intergenerational connection left a lasting mark.

Adela Dworin (1935-2024): A Legacy of Dedication and Resilience: Preserving Jewish Life and Identity in Cuba

Adela Dworin stands as a symbol of enduring dedication and leadership within the Cuban Jewish community. Her remarkable journey began in 1970, when she started volunteering for the community, a commitment that would span over four decades. Her passion and relentless efforts laid the groundwork for her appointment as president of the Cuban Jewish Community in 2006, following the passing of Dr. José Miller, the former president. Adela held this role until 2023, dedicating nearly two decades to revitalizing and preserving Jewish life in Cuba.

    Revitalizing Jewish Life in Cuba

Adela’s leadership played a crucial role in the rebirth of the Cuban Jewish community after years of decline and focused on restoring synagogues, cultural centers, and religious practices that had been neglected during challenging periods. Diplomatic Engagement with National Leadership

Adela’s diplomatic skills were evident in her relationship with prominent figures like Fidel Castro. In 1998, she met Fidel during a gathering of religious leaders at the presidential palace, where he announced Christmas as a national holiday and affirmed the right to religious freedom. Adela invited Fidel to a Hanukkah celebration at the synagogue, and he accepted, emphasizing his respect for the Jewish community. His participation and speech about Jewish history highlighted Adela’s ability to secure the Jewish community’s place in Cuba’s cultural and religious life.

Adela’s leadership united Cuba’s Jewish community through cultural and religious events that celebrated their identity and resilience. Her guidance helped Jewish life in Cuba thrive, leaving a lasting legacy of vibrancy and inspiration.

Saul Berenthal: (1944 – 2023):  A Legacy of Jewish Resilience

Among the key figures in the revitalization of Jewish life in Cuba, Saul Berenthal and his family stand out for their significant efforts in preserving and advancing the Jewish community on the island. Born in Cuba, Saul Berenthal returned to his homeland after nearly five decades abroad, recognizing the need for kosher accommodations to serve both the local Jewish community and Jewish travelers visiting Cuba. His solution came in the form of Chateau Blanc, Cuba’s first and only kosher boutique hotel.

Opened in 2018 in the Nuevo Vedado neighborhood of Havana, Chateau Blanc is an upscale kosher-certified bed and breakfast that offers a modern, comfortable environment with premium food, carefully prepared according to kosher standards. With a focus on providing authentic kosher experiences, the hotel quickly became a vital resource for both local Cuban Jews and international Jewish tourists. It also contributes significantly to Jewish tourism, providing a gateway for those who want to connect with Cuba’s unique Jewish history.

Beyond Chateau Blanc, Saul Berenthal and his family have also made critical contributions to preserving Cuba’s Jewish heritage. Saul has played an active role in the restoration of Jewish cemeteries in Havana. One such cemetery holds the graves of many of his ancestors, and his efforts to restore it ensure that future generations can honor and remember the Jewish community’s history in Cuba.

In addition to their work with the cemetery and Chateau Blanc, the Berenthal family has played a key role in community-building efforts, strengthening ties within Cuba’s Jewish community and beyond. Through supporting Jewish travelers and fostering global connections, they have become a beacon of hope for Cuban Jewry. Their dedication to preserving and rebuilding Jewish heritage ensures that the legacy of Cuban Jewry endures, despite the community’s many challenges.
